The Rolling Stones' "Shine A Light" is a song about hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who has hit rock bottom, but who is still holding onto the hope that things will get better. The tune was written for the Rolling Stones' bassist, Brian Jones, who battled addiction that ultimately cost him his life. The song's message is that even in the darkest of times, there is always light to be found. The lyrics and melody create this juxtaposition of being down and out, suddenly finding hope as "the Good Lord shine a light on you".

This message is particularly relevant today, as many people are struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression. In a world that is constantly changing and demanding, it can be difficult to find peace and happiness. However, it is possible, and even imperative, that we cultivate inner peace amid the chaos of life. Peace is not an external feeling. It must come from within us, often buried deep under a pile of hurt feelings and self-doubts. It is up to use to drag that peace back into the light, where it can radiate its light out into the world.

One of the simplest ways to do this is through mindfulness and meditation. Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Meditation is a technique for training the mind to empty itself of thought or activity in order to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. It can be almost impossible to quiet our minds, which have been trained to be active when we are awake. As these thoughts come to us during a meditation session, we must acknowledge them and then let them move on, much like the lyrics to this beautiful song.

When we practice mindfulness and meditation, we learn to observe our thoughts and feelings without getting carried away by them. We learn to accept ourselves and our experiences, even the difficult ones. And we learn to find peace and happiness in the present moment. That is one of the core messages I pull from "Shine A Light". "Make every song you sing, your favorite tune" is a directive to live in the here and now, making the best of every moment you are given. We live our choices every day, and one of the better choices we could make is to carry a positive mindset. To make every song we sing, our favorite one.

The lyrics of "Shine A Light" offer a powerful reminder of the importance of mindfulness and meditation. The song's message is that even when we are feeling lost and alone, we can still find hope and peace within ourselves.

Here are a few actionable items that you can do starting today to bring mindfulness and meditation into your life and achieve more happiness:

  • Start small. You don't need to meditate for an hour every day to experience the benefits of mindfulness. Even a few minutes of mindful breathing can make a difference. See the 10 minute program I've outlined at the end of this post.

  • Find a quiet place. Choose a place where you can sit or lie down without being disturbed. A good environment is critical as our surrounding play an important role in how we feel.

  • Focus on your breath. Pay attention to the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your body. Breathing is the most natural thing we do on a daily basis. What's even cooler is that it is something we don't have to think about. It just happens. Take a minute to notice this miracle of the human body. Feel the air of life coming into your lungs then pushing out of your body. It's amazing.

  • Don't judge your thoughts. When your mind wanders, simply notice where it has gone and gently redirect your attention back to your breath. Thoughts are fleeting. Becoming mindful allows us to recognize these thoughts and move past them. This will play an important role in both controlling our emotions and letting go of the past.

  • Be patient. It takes time and practice to develop mindfulness. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately. Improved mental health is a long play. We are trying to overcome a lifetime of history to create a perpetual inner peace for the future. It's not an easy task by any means and it certainly wont happen overnight.

Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools that can help us to find peace and happiness in our lives. If you are struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression, I encourage you to give them a try. You may be surprised at how much they can help.

Good luck, friends. Please take care of yourselves and others.
